FlyTech UAV, professional drone manufacturer recently presented the unique VTOL (Vertical Take-off and Landing) solution, which is an upgrade to their flagship fixed-wing BIRDIE.
What makes the solution different from other VTOL drones on the market? Detachable extension modules that make it literally two systems in one.
Modules can be attached and detached at any time, giving the user flexibility of use. The upgrade gives more possibilities to UAV BIRDIE users, as they are free to choose between fixed-wing and VTOL, depending on terrain conditions.
The VTOL Modules come in a separate carry bag and the VTOL Modules does not connect tot he main battery of the drone. It has it’s own Lio-Po batteries for vertical take off and landing. This way the Autonomous Vertical Take-Off and Landing does not draw any unnecessary power from the main battery. Vertical Take-Off and Landing does require a big draw on batteries.
VTOL has many benefits when you are stuck for space to land. Most Fixed-Wing solutions need about 100 meters by 100 meters to land the drone safely. You could have a tighter landing zone but you could be putting the drone in danger of crashing. With the VTOL the landing Zone needs 20 meters by 20 meters for the landing. Remember the landing a vertical landing and is Autonomous, so most of the heavy thinking when it comes to landing is taken away form you. You do however have the ability to take over the control of the Autonomous landing and land the drone yourself, if the need for the unlikely event of an emergency take-over from the Pilot is required.
How does it work?
The use of VTOL extension module is recommended when it is not possible to use fixed-wing due to hard surfaces, lack of proper takeoff and landing space. It only takes a few seconds to attach the extension modules between the body and wings of the plane. The dedicated flight controller adjusts the flight mode automatically.
As a result, the plane takes off vertically (fully autonomously), then converts to the horizontal flight, follows the mission pattern and finally – lands vertically wherever you want. What is important, the module is used without the loss of data quality: for both BIRDIE fixed-wing and VTOL you can achieve the accuracy up to 3 cm and the resolution up to 1 cm/px.
The module gives a possibility to use a drone in demanding environment, e.g. in forest, mountains, rocks, etc.
Drone BIRDIE by FlyTech UAV is a complete mapping solution. The set consists of the fixed-wing platform (now with optional VTOL extensions), dedicated flight controller, PPK, full-frame camera and GSM connectivity for unlimited flight range. It is available in classic fixed-wing version and can be upgraded to VTOL at any time after the purchase.
The Camera is a Sony Camera with a Full Frame sensor. This camera allows the user to fly at the Maximum flight height and still be able to get very high quality detail of its Survey Area. The image resolution is 7952X5304. You can select the Camera Shutter Speed and the F-Stop. This flexibility will give you a greater functionality in the different light conditions that we have here in Ireland. Lets be honest, we could have a very sunny morning and then in the afternoon the lighting conditions can change to overcast. With the ability to change Camera settings after every flight in this scenario is definitely a plus.
