Ireland’s First Commercial BVLOS Medical Delivery and Collection.
The #Diabetesdrone delivery of insulin to Inishmore is our most recent Project where we were responsible for providing the drone and executing the flight, including all the necessary documentation / permissions required for this innovative beyond visual line of sight project. The drone was so efficient that it returned back to the mainland with a blood sample for testing in University Hospital Galway and had enough battery power to make both flights totalling 43.3KM again.
This Project came about from conversions that started back in April 2019. We teamed up with Sky Tango’s Steve Flynn who in turn was in talks with Dr Derek O’Keeffe from the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG). He found that after a bad storm or very bad weather that his Clinic from the Aran Island was very small. He investigated this further and found the normal modes of transport where not functioning. He then thought about the implication this would have on people who relied on medicine like Insulin. We all got together over the phone and began the discussions of a possible Beyond Visual Line of Sight Mission to the Aran Island’s. Having completed Military BVLOS Mission before, I knew that this can be achieved, once the correct documentation and training can be completed before the project date, we should be ready to submit our project to the Irish Aviation Authority to get permission to fly.
